3 of America's biggest pharmacy chains have been found liable for the opioid crisis

A federal jury on Tuesday found three of the nation's biggest pharmacy chains, CVS, Walgreens and Walmart, liable for helping to fuel the U.S. opioid crisis — a decision that's expected to have legal repercussions as thousands of similar lawsuits move forward in courts across the country. Jurors concluded that the pharmacies contributed to a so-called public nuisance in Lake and Trumbull counties in Ohio by selling and dispensing huge quantities of prescription pain pills.

Google and its video platform YouTube owe nearly $26 million for infringing a streaming-video patent owned by VideoShare LLC, a Texas federal jury said. The Waco, Texas jury found Tuesday that YouTube's streaming technology works in the same way as VideoShare's patented technology for converting a video to multiple formats and transmitting it in the best format for a user's device.

Swedish prosecutors on Thursday brought charges against the chairman and former CEO of Lundin Energy for complicity in war crimes carried out by the Sudanese army and allied militia in southern Sudan from 1999 to 2003. Researchers form the Law School Survey of Student Engagement (LSSSE) collected data from 13,000 law students across the country in the spring of 2021, making it among the first large-scale studies of how law students experienced the pandemic.

Burnt out, sleep deprived and hiding mental health problems: lawyers reveal struggles

More than two-thirds of lawyers (69%) have experienced mental ill health in the last year, according to a new snapshot of wellbeing in the profession. The survey of around 1,700 legal professionals by legal charity LawCare also found that just 56% of those suffering had discussed their problems at work. Respondents in this group said they had not disclosed their condition for fear of the stigma that would attach, the resulting career implications and the financial and reputational consequences.

Firms should embrace remote working, say in-house lawyers

The majority of in-house lawyers would be happy for their external lawyers to work from home, according to responses collated so far in the RollOnFriday in-house survey. In the poll, to date, 61% of in-house lawyers said that they wouldn't mind if the lawyers that they instruct work remotely. 31% said they would actually prefer that law firms give staff the flexibility to work from home. Only 8% of respondents wanted their lawyers to be in the office.
